Hobart is one of Australias most scenically beautiful and historic cities. It is the capital of Tasmania and the nations second oldest capital city. Hobart lies in a magnificent setting on the banks of the Derwent River estuary and at the foot of Mt Wellington. In winter the mountain is snow capped and during the summer provides a magnificent lookout over the western wilderness regions and over the city and river to the east. Hobart started its days of European settlement as a penal colony in 1803 . Today it has a population of 20900 people. It is the largest city in Tasmania and the place where all tourists come at some time during their holiday. It is also the base for both Australian and French Antarctic research expeditions.

You can never get far away from reminders of Tasmanias convict heritage. All around the city of Hobart, you will find magnificent stone buildings and bridges which are reminders of the convict artisans who constructed them. The city commercial center is built around the waterfront area of Constitution Dock and Salamanca Place and this part of the city is full of sandstone buildings and warehouses that have convict origins, but today have been converted into quaint cafes, cosy restaurants in Hobart and busy boutiques. Every Saturday the Salamanca markets liven up the region with colourful displays. The finish line for the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht race is just off Battery Point and after the race the yachts are all rafted together in Constitution Dock, right in the middle of town. The huge influx of celebrating yachtsmen and locals joining in the fun creates a fantastic party atmosphere.

Hobart has plenty of quality accommodation and is a great starting point for a Tasmanian holiday. Many campervan and motorhome hire companies have depots here and the state is a fantastic destination for this type of holiday. Many of Tasmanias best tourist attractions are within easy reach of Hobart. To the south east is the Peninsular and the magnificent ruins of the penal colony of Port Arthur. To the north, it is only a short drive into the midlands of Tasmania. Scenic areas like Lake St Clair National Park and Cradle Mountain are favourite destinations and the fishing villages along the east coast are friendly. The coastal scenery around Tasmania is nothing short of sensational.
